Hey honey, take a look on the wild side! propose de découvrir le travail d'un artiste musicien et, en mettant l'accent sur une part plus confidentielle de sa personnalité, sa pratique artistique.
L'événement se divise en deux temps distincts; la présentation des oeuvres de l'artiste sous la forme d'une exposition, puis dans un second temps, une performance musicale.
L'exposition donne lieu à l'édition d'un ou de plusieurs multiples en sérigraphie.

« J'ai d'abord commencé à découper parce que je voulais quelque chose à faire en voyageant.
J'avais de longues tournées avec mon groupe Half Japanese et j'ai ressenti le besoin d'utiliser toutes ces heures passées dans le van.
Lire me donnait mal au coeur, et ma main tremblait trop pour dessiner,
mais j'ai découvert que je pouvais m 'en sortir pas mal avec une paire de ciseaux. »

Débarqué du Texas où il vit avec sa femme Patty, ses deux chevaux Pepper et Wunjo et ses trois chiens, Sunshine, Cowboy et Jiffy Pop, Jad Fair présente sa première exposition personnelle en France depuis une quinzaine d'années.
Les Beatles combattant un géant aux côtés de superman, des monstres en tee-shirts hello kitty, des squelettes, des poissons ou des coeurs... En art comme en musique Jad Fair manie des formes simples et banales, d'une apparente naïveté. Influencées par les découpages mexicains qu'il côtoie régulièrement comme par ceux de son frère David, ses compositions sont autant d'accumulations de scènes légères et grinçantes, qui malgré de faux airs de maladresse manient avec habileté ironie et humour.

Jair Fair.: There are rattle snakes in Texas. I try not to walk through tall grass
because of that.
M.O: Your recipe for a good time?
J.F: On weekends my wife and I like to go out for lunch and see a movie. I
always enjoy that.

BIO
En 1974, Jad Fair co-fonda avec son frère David, le groupe de rock alternatif lo-fi 'Half Japanese'. Durant les trois décennies suivantes, 'Half Japanese' sortit environ 30 albums s'attirant ainsi un grand nombre d'inconditionnels grâce à son enthousiasme pur et débridé pour le rock. Parmi les fans célèbres de 'Half Japanese', on retrouve Pen Jillette ( du duo comique Penn & Teller ) qui finança le label ' The 50 Skidillion Watts ' dans le but de sortir les albums de 'Half Japanese '. Kurt Cobain fut également un fervent admirateur du groupe leur demandant, en 1994, d'assurer la 1ère partie de huit concerts de Nirvana sur la tournée ' In Utero '
Le documentaire, ' Half Japanese : The Band That Would Be King ', retrace l'histoire et la trajectoire de ce groupe unique. Sorti en 1993 et dirigé par Jeff Feuerzeig, il reçut un accueil critique très favorable.
Jad joue et enregistre également en solo et a collaboré occasionnellement avec des musiciens parmi lesquels on peut citer entre autres, Daniel Johnston, Teenage Fanclub, Moe Tucker ( Velvet Underground ), Yo La Tengo, Steve Shelly et Thurston Moore ( Sonic Youth ), John Zorn et Kramer. Ses chansons figurent dans les B.O de deux ' biopics' majeurs : ' Kurt Cobain : About A Son ' et ' The Devil And Daniel Johnston, dans plusieurs courts- métrages d'animation de Martha Colburn, ainsi que dans deux films européens : le suisse ' Lucy Et Maintenant ' et l'italien ' Ora O Mai Piu '. En 2004, ' Crush On You ', un titre de Teenage Fanclub & Jad Fair ( tiré de l'album ' Words Of Wisdom And Hope ' ) figura dans la B.O d'un épisode du show télé ' Trigger Happy '.
Le talent de Jad pour le design de pochettes d'albums, ( il réalisa de nombreuses pochettes de ' Half Japanese ' ainsi que celles de la plupart de ses albums solo ), le mena vers une seconde carrière d' artiste plasticien. Ses dessins simples et joyeux et ses découpages de papiers complexes et tortueux sont présentés dans des galeries aux Etats-Unis, au Canada, en Europe, en Austalie et au Japon. Seize livres présentant ses oeuvres ont été publiés au Royaume-Uni, en Allemagne, en France, en Suisse, aux Pays-Bas, aux Etats-Unis et au Japon incluant le coloré 'Blue Skies Cuttings & Monsters' publié aux éditions Map en 2006.
LE PROJET DOJO
Depuis 2002, une entreprise conduit à Nice une expérience inédite. Occupant des locaux de 800 m2 aux allures de white cube sur le port, elle invite des artistes ou curators à imaginer des projets in situ. Non pas à titre décoratif mais sur le mode d’un engagement total et expérimental, l’invitation prenant la forme d’une carte blanche aussi inconditionnelle que sincère. Les artistes sont ainsi conviés à prendre l’espace à bras le corps mais aussi, à se confronter à une logique inhabituelle : la proposition artistique devra s’accommoder d’êtres vivants et travaillant. En répondant à l’appel du Dojo, les artistes entrent de plain-pied dans une réalité dont on les croit trop souvent éloignés. L’économie de marché, l’entreprise privée, les rapports humains, le fonctionnement même d’une société commerciale, autant de champs que les artistes questionnent en intervenant dans ce contexte. D’exposition, il n’est pas question mais plutôt de propositions, d’interventions, de projets utopiques ou polémiques, structurant ou déconstruisant, une expérience nouvelle qui prend son sens au fil des jours et aux heures de bureau, quand s’opère la rencontre entre une équipe au travail et la vision d’un artiste. Aux confins parfois de l’architecture d’intérieur ou du design, prenant souvent la forme d’installations, associant la photo, la vidéo, le son, voire la sculpture et jusqu’à la peinture, les projets artistiques se succèdent, toujours produits par le Dojo, structure associative supportée en partie par l’entreprise. Se dessine au fil du temps un formidable terrain de jeu pour les artistes et l’opportunité rare d’un espace de liberté et de réalité offert à la création contemporaine.
JAD FAIR ET LE CYCLE HHTLWS
Parmi la diversité des expérimentations menées au Dojo, l’indiscipline est une préoccupation récurrente. A savoir, le croisement des pratiques artistiques, les rencontres à la marge, le plus loin possible d’un art académique ou convenu. Parallèlement aux projets plastiques, le Dojo a tour à tour invité des artistes de la performance, des plasticiens sonores et des musiciens atypiques. L’invitation de Jad Fair s’inscrit dans ce cadre et fait suite à une proposition de l’artiste Marion Orel qui a choisi ici d’explorer la pratique artistique cachée de certaines figures de la musique actuelle. De là est né un cycle de projets judicieusement intitulé «Hey Honey, take a look on the wild side ! ». Pour l’inaugurer, le Dojo a la chance d’accueillir Jad Fair, personnalité éminente du rock alternatif américain, dont on pourra découvrir des œuvres récentes, fidèles à son homework déjà montré dans de nombreuses galeries à travers le monde. Un univers personnel fruit du désœuvrement, d’une fascination pour l’imagerie vernaculaire mexicaine, d’une naïveté éternelle et d’un regard pour le moins singulier.

A PROPOSAL BY MARION OREL
Hey Honey, Take a Look On the Wild Side! offers to discover the work of a musician artist and, stressing a more confidential side of his personality, his artistic practice.
The event is divided into two separate stages: the presentation of some of the artist's works under the form of an exhibition, then, secondly, a musical performance.
The exhibition gives the opportunity to produce one or several multiples in silk-screen presses.

Fresh from Texas, where he lives with his wife Patty, his two horses: Pepper and Wunjo and his three dogs: Sunshine, Cowboy and Jiffy Pop, Jad Fair presents his first solo exhibition in France in the last fifteen years.
The Beatles fighting a giant next to Superman, monsters in Hello Kitty! T-Shirts, skeletons, fish or hearts… In art like in music, Jad Fair manipulates simple and banal forms of an apparent naïveté. Influenced by Mexican cut-offs regularly around him as well as those by his brother David, his compositions are as many accumulations of light and grating scenes that, despite their seeming clumsiness, skillfully manipulate irony and humor.

BIO
In 1974, with his brother David, Jad Fair co-founded the lo-fi
alternative rock group Half Japanese. Over the ensuing three decades,
Half Japanese released nearly 30 records, and in the process,
attracted a solid base of fans passionate about the band’s pure,
unbridled enthusiasm for rock and roll. Illustrious Half Japanese fans
include Penn Jillette (of the comedy duo Penn & Teller), who financed
the 50 Skidillion Watts record label in order to release Half
Japanese’s records. Kurt Cobain was also a devoted fan of the group;
in 1994, he asked Half Japanese to open for the east coast leg of
Nirvana’s “In Utero” tour. They did eight shows.
“Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King” is a critically acclaimed
documentary that chronicles the band’s unique history and trajectory.
Directed by Jeff Feuerzeig, the film was released in 1993.
Jad also performs and records as a solo artist, and occasionally
collaborates with such musicians as Daniel Johnston, Teenage Fanclub,
Moe Tucker (of Velvet Underground), Yo La Tengo, Steve Shelly and
Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth), John Zorn, Kramer, and more. His
songs have been featured in the soundtracks of two major biographical
films: Kurt Cobain: About A Son, and The Devil And Daniel Johnston, as
well as in several animated shorts by Martha Colburn, two European
films: the Swiss Luci et Maintenant, and the Italian Ora O Mai Piu. In
2004, Comedy Central’s Trigger Happy TV show featured “Crush On You,”
a song from the Teenage Fanclub & Jad Fair: Words of Wisdom and Hope
album, in the soundtrack of episode #302.
Jad’s talent for album cover design (he designed many of Half
Japanese’s and most of his own solo album covers) led Jad to a second
career as visual artist. His simple, joyous drawings and intricate,
complex paper cuttings are shown in galleries across the United
States, Canada, Europe, Austrailia, and Japan. Sixteen books of his
artwork have been published in the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland,
The Netherlands, the U.S., and Japan, including the colorful Blue
Skies and Monsters, published by Map in 2006.
THE DOJO PROJECT
Since 2002, a company has been leading an unprecedented experience in Nice. Occupying 800m2 of premises looking like a white cube on the port, it invites artists or curators to imagine projects on location. Not for decoration purposes but on the mode of a total and experimental commitment. The invitation is made under the form of a "carte blanche" as unconditional as it is sincere. The artists are thus invited to tackle with the space and also to confront to an unusual logic: the artistic proposal will have to put up with living and working beings. By answering the Dojo call, the artists enter straight into a reality from which they are too often thought remote. The market economy, private company, human connections, the very functioning of a business, as many fields the artists question by intervening in this context. It is not about an exhibition but rather about proposals, interventions, utopian or polemic projects, structuring or deconstructing, a new experience taking its full meaning day after day during business hours, when the encounter occurs between the working team and an artist's vision. Sometimes on the verge of interior design or of design itself, often taking the form of an installation, associating photography, video, sound, even sculpture and painting, the artistic projects take over from one another, always produced by the Dojo, an association supported in part by the company. As time goes by, a formidable playground is drawn out for artists, and the rare opportunity of a space of freedom and reality offered to contemporary creation.
JAD FAIR AND THE HHTLWS CYCLE
Among the diversity of the experiments conducted at the Dojo, indiscipline has been a recurring preoccupation, specifically, the crossing of artistic practices, meetings on the edge, as far as possible from academic or conventional art. In parallel with plastic projects, the Dojo successively invited performance artists, sound artists and atypical musicians. Inviting Jad Fair enters this framework and follows a proposal by the artist Mario Orel who chose here to explore the hidden artistic practice of some current musical figures. From there was born a cycle of projects cleverly named "Hey Honey, Take a Look On the Wild Side!" To inaugurate it the Dojo is lucky to greet Jad Fair, an eminent personality in American alternative rock, whose recent works will be disclosed, faithful to his home-works already shown in many galleries around the word. A personal universe, the fruit of idleness, of a certain fascination for the Mexican vernacular imagery, an eternal naïveté and a quite singular vision.
